WHY SOY WAX?
Choosing the wax we wanted for our candles was a simple choice. Soy wax is a natural, renewable resource and ours is derived from US grown soy beans. Soy wax has a low melt point so your candles can burn as long as possible with zero petro soot. Burn our candles with confidence that you aren’t breathing in dangerous and harmful chemicals or fumes
HOW IS SOY WAX MADE?
Soy wax is a vegetable wax produced from soybean oil. Soybeans are harvested, cleaned, dehulled, cracked, and then rolled into flecks. Oil is then extracted from these flecks and hydrogenated. It solidifies at room temperature, and that's how soy wax is made.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOY AND PARAFFIN?
Most name brand candles (think Yankee Candle and Bath & Body Works) are made with paraffin wax which is a refined gasoline byproduct. Paraffin releases toxins into the air when burned. A study by South Carolina State University found that burning paraffin wax candles gave off harmful fumes, toluene and benzene, which are linked to asthma and lung cancer. Some studies have also shown that burning paraffin can release more toxins than cigarettes. Soy wax however is a clean burning, natural byproduct made from soybeans. While soy wax can still produce soot, this is usually caused by not trimming your wick before each lighting, it’s not harmful and is very minimal. Soy wax is also biodegradable and environmentally friendly.
ARE YOUR PRODUCTS VEGAN?
Absolutely! Here at Amber & Wood we DO NOT test any products on animals nor do we ever purchase materials from companies who test on animals.
WHY IS THE TOP OF MY CANDLE UNEVEN AND BUMPY?
This happens when, after the candle is poured, the wax cools inconsistently. The temperature and humidity of the room when making the candle can cause it to cool too quickly or too slowly. This can cause it to dry with a rough, uneven surface and sometimes it will dry smooth as glass. This is a byproduct of all natural wax and it does not affect the performance of the candle.
ARE YOUR CANDLES SCENTED WITH ESSENTIAL OILS?
Our candles are scented with the highest quality, phthalate-free fragrance oils that are INFUSED with natural essential oils.
WHY NOT JUST USE 100% ESSENTIAL OILS TO SCENT YOUR CANDLES?
So in theory I can see how that sounds like it would be super simple to do. However there’s a lot of factors when it comes to essential oils. First of all many essential oils are toxic when burned, this is why essential oils diffusers are COOL mist diffusers. Second, not all essential oils are safe for everyone! (For example: peppermint is NOT safe for pregnant women. Peppermint, eucalyptus, cinnamon, clove, copaiba, and many more are NOT safe for children under 10 years old. Cinnamon, citrus, pine, peppermint, tea tree, and more are TOXIC to pets) Third, essential oils are not formulated to bind with wax so they would give off little to no scent throw. And lastly, essential oils are very expensive! The amount of essential oil that would be needed to make 1 8oz candle would not be worth it!
